Director : Vikraman
Producer :
R.B.Chowdry
Music Director :
S.A.Rajkumar
Story: Before I start off the review for this movie, let me go over the career of Vijay before and after this mega-hit. Naalaya Theerpu did fairly well in the box office but was not a great start; later his Sendoorpandi, Rasigan, Deva, Manbumigu Manavan etc were hits where as Chandralekha was his only flop. After this film Poove Unnakaga, Vijay's films like Vasantha Vasal and Kaalam Ellam Kathiruppen were flops. However, this film was his first mega-hit which gave way to other mega-hit films like Once More, Kadhalukku Mariadhai, Love Today, Naerukku Naer, Ninaithen Vandhai, Nilaave Vaa etc which were all mega-hits in their own right. Now with the review. Stephen (Nagesh) and Nambiar have been college day best friends and so are their children Jaiganesh and Vasudevan. Jaiganesh's family members are Christians whereas Vasudevan's are Hindu. Jaiganesh's son is Lawrence and Vasudevan's daughter is Anju Aravind. Robert is the brother of Jaiganesh and Janaki is the sister of Vasudevan. Both of them as described very well by a lad; fell in love with each other. Against their families will, they marry each other and run away from their homes. Ever since then, both families hate each other and to solve this Raja (Vijay); the son of Robert and Janaki; and his friend Charlie come to the village. Though his uncles hate him, his grandparents, aunties and uncles love Vijay but none go against the word of Jaiganesh and Vasudevan; hence Vijay and Charlie find accommodation in the house of a loud, frightful Velingiri. Later, both of his aunts appear before him with marriage proposals and to avoid any more, he says he is married to a Hindu-Christian like himself. Here comes Sangeetha, posing as Vijay's wife and convinces the rest; causing Vijay to suffer a bit. However, when Vijay gives her the duty of a wife, she reveals that she is the real child and only daughter of Robert & Janaki and asks Vijay why he is acting as the grandson of Nagesh & Nambiar. Now it is his turn to reveal his truth and the director plots this very carefully. Vijay struggled on his way to get a job after getting First Class in B-Com studies. Next to his rented out house; which he shared with Charlie, was a ladies hostel which featured Anju Aravind. As she and her group were trying to find a good tune to a song for a contest, Vijay indirectly helps her and Vijay falls in love while she treats him as a good friend. As he was about to notify Anju Aravind, of his love for her, she notifies Vijay of her love for Lawrence. Hearing their plan to marry without their parents consent because of the Robert-Janaki problem, Vijay decides to pose as the son of who ran away couple. Now, both Vijay and Sangeetha carry out this mission and when Vijay is seen helping out the lovers in their ways of marrying, Anju Aravind's father gets notified of this and so the news as fire, gets spread quickly and both families now think they have run away and want to kill the members of the other. Meanwhile, Vijay has rejoined the friendship of the aunts and the grandparents so the uncles and the lovers is his main concern. He does this at once in style. After the marriage, the truth of Vijay's appearance is revealed, and when Vijay is asked to marry Sangeetha, he replies a "no" for a good reason.

To forget all these and to start a new life, Manimekalai goes to Ooty and joins Karan's company. Kannan follows her to Ooty - this time he wants to convey his apologies to her. Manimekalai hates him and tries to make him leave Ooty. The series of incidents which follow leads to the climax. Vijay, Karan, Jaisankar and Sri Vidya provide the required acting. Dimple's (debut) acting is OK, but, she can improve more in her acting skills. Delhi Ganesh has acted as Dimple's father and he has been wasted. Manivannan has a separate comedy track and it is enjoyable.

Kadalukku Mariyadhai:-

Kadalukku Mariyadhai
Co-stars: Vijay, Shalini, Shivakumar, Srividya, Lalitha, Radharavi, Vijai and Shaji Khan.

Director:
Fazil
Music Director:
Ilayaraja.
Story: Jeeva (Vijay) meets Mini (Shalini) in a book shop and their eyes meet leading to sparks of love in their hearts. Mini has a loving mother (K.P.S.Lalitha) and three brothers, James (Radha Ravi), Thomas (Thalaivaasal Vijay) and Stephen (newcomer Shaji Khan) and she is the apple of their eye. Mini is hesitant to reciprocate her love for Jeeva who steadily makes an inroad into her heart, the love affair incensing her family members who give him a thrashing each time he meets her. Jeeva's parents are under the impression that their son is pursuing his MBA studies until his father receives a SOS from Jeeva, injured in one such beatings. His father Chandrasekhar (Sivakumar) is stunned by the developments and Jeeva's mother (Srividya) is also shocked. Jeeva refuses to part company with Mini when his father arrives with his henchmen to take him back. The Christian family wants Jeeva dead. The developments till this juncture might have found expression in earlier movies but these events have been treated with a mature head along with some comic element by Charlie and Dhamu, as the friends of the hero. Realising that the lovers' existence is in danger, Kesavan (Charly) suggests that they find refuge in his father's (Manivannan's) fishermen hamlet and the couple elope followed by the brothers. Manivannan refuses to give them away and the brothers swear bloodshed. A registrar wedding is quickly arranged and on the eve of the wedding, the lovers learn of the unlimited love, affection and care their respective family members have for them and decide not to hurt their sentiments. They agree to part company. The fisherfolk leader is shocked first at their decision, and later understands their feelings and sends them back safely, an appreciable twist in the movie. The best segment of the movie follows next. The elated and much relieved elders hastily arrange the weddings of their offsprings when the respective mothers learn how lonesome the two lovers are. Jeeva's mother using the excuse of returning the chain belonging to Mini, goes to Mini's house with her husband, son and his two friends and James receives them warmly. Instead of sparks flying here the director brings into play the human sentiments, the mothers leading the show, and the camera of Anand Kuttan sharply catching the artistes at their best. The meagre amount of dialogue merges wonderfully with those enacting them, an interesting climax. Serious looking Shalini enacts the tender role of a confused sweetheart caught between the love of her elders and that of the man who has stolen her heart without blemish. Vijay shows controlled aggression in his fights as the rivals happen to be the brothers of his sweetheart and dances with relish. His voice modulations heightens his portrayal. Sivakumar, Srividya and Lalitha make fine contributions to the drama along with the three brothers, Radharavi, Vijai and Shaji Khan.

Shah Jahan:-

Story: Shah Jahan - you couldn't get a more shorter plotline or tagline to put the whole movie in a nutshell. Similarly you would have been grateful if the movie was shorter than you had hoped it would be. Vijay plays a character Ashok, the epitome of sacrifice, who is totally in love with the concept of youngsters falling in love with each other. A guardian angel who makes dreams come true for his fellow friends, the only difference being is that this angel seems to be trained in martial arts is not so much for peace. So our Shah Jahan, Ashok is basically about this guy with a your-love-is-my-love kind of attitude takes it upon his head to unite all lovers but only to see his love not materialize. Vijay's friend Raja(played by Krishna) asks Vijay for the latest Cupid tricks to impress his dream girl. So Vijay - being the king of love (as depicted) helps him and finally Krishna wins Richa's heart. Now the couple finally happily and blissfully in love, trouble starts when the parents raise a deadly opposition to the lovers choice. That's when the kickboxing action starts for Vijay. He also devices a master plan to get the couple registered for marriage and finally when the girl arrives he can't believe his own eyes. It is more than just a bolt from the blue for Vijay, it is a mega-volt bolt from all the VIBGYOR colors. While all this Cupid service express is happening, it becomes too late when Vijay realizes that he has actually been helping his friend Krishna to fall in love with the girl he is in love with. But Vijay swallows his 'love' [cause the element pride is missing there] and beats up the bad Daddies in town for the sake of his friend. Why he hesitates to disclose his love? Do all Daddies have personally hired hooligans? And why did Vijay take up such a sacrificial role, so sacrificial that it paints the picture he was so willing to sacrifice his own career will remain some of those other unanswered questions in your mind regarding this movie.
